Eye watering: performance and price
Author: Toby Aiken, Posted: Friday, 21st February 2025, 09:00
I’ve experienced something new, something almost uncomfortable. It’s the knowledge that while I absolutely loved this month’s test car, given the money, I’m genuinely not sure I’d buy it.
I mean sure, *when* I win the Euromillions jackpot, I probably will, but I will do so knowing full well it’s a total indulgence. The car is simply beautiful – elegant lines, spacious and practical, well-equipped and technologically brilliant, blisteringly fast with incredible handling; what’s not to love? I’ll get to that later.
This month, I was behind the wheel of the very long-named Audi RS e-Tron GT Performance. Audi tout this as the most powerful production car they have ever made, and to top it all off, it has a massive boot, seating for five and doesn’t require Cirque du Soleil-level contortion abilities to get in and out.
This electric behemoth generates an astonishing 925bhp
It also has an all-electric drivetrain, which naturally (it’s a performance Audi, after all) shunts power to all four wheels. And that power… there’s no doubt a complex (or simple, who knows?) formula for converting kW battery power into horsepower, but by all accounts, this electric behemoth generates an astonishing 925bhp, or thereabouts.
It seems there are a few contradictory sources of information on the internet, but quite frankly when the count is over 900, I think it’s largely irrelevant what the exact figure is.
I’ll get onto the practicality of driving and the experience, but that power is frankly immense. Sticking the thing in either of the two RS modes, or Performance, and planting your right foot would see all four wheels spin for a moment before the whole thing takes off – literally – in near-silence!
I say near-silence, because the whine of the electric motors is somehow reminiscent of a jet. You feel a burst of power and see the scenery blur until you realise you’ve hit the national speed limit in less than three seconds. And it does all of this in a practical family saloon with four doors. This is bonkers.
The levels of comfort are exquisite too – lots of tactile carbon fibre and comfortable Alcantara leather make it an incredibly sumptuous place to sit. As the car sits quite low when driving, it’s a lovely little touch that when you open the door, the whole car rises a few inches, to facilitate an easier entry/exit.
It has all the toys you might want
As you’d expect, it has all the toys you might want – this is a top spec Audi, after all – and one that I only toyed with once or twice. Remember I said this thing will hit 60mph in less than three seconds? Well, in case that’s not enough, there’s a red button on the steering wheel that, when pressed, gives you 10 seconds of additional boost!
So, back to the ‘what’s not to love?’ question. It’s the price. There’s no hiding it, it’s basically £180,000. That is my only issue. I can only buy it after I win that massive jackpot.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
