The new City Campus in Kings Square marks a significant step forward for Gloucester.
After the closure of Debenhams, there were concerns the landmark building would remain empty, but the University’s purchase of the site in March 2021 was met with relief and optimism.

Now, the former department store has been transformed into a modern hub for education, learning and community involvement. The campus is set to develop graduates who will play vital roles in the region, helping to create new opportunities for local residents and attracting fresh talent to the city.

Continuing its strong tradition in teacher education, the University is establishing City Campus as a centre for educational excellence. The campus also houses students and staff from the fields of psychological sciences and social work.

The City Campus’s central location is expected to boost visitor numbers

In addition, Gloucester’s public library has moved to the campus, and its central location is expected to boost the number of visitors.

City Campus is also designed to be a focal point for training, events, business support and free legal advice for people living in the city centre. This development forms part of a wider £200 million regeneration project in the area.

Revitalising this important part of Kings Square is a major positive change for Gloucester. With City Campus at its heart, the city centre is on track to become more vibrant, sustainable and economically successful. Other projects, such as The Forum, which will include advanced business facilities, a new hotel and a multi-storey car park, are also expected to bring more people and activity to Kings Quarter.

It is anticipated that business owners will make the most of the increased opportunities from the campus’ students, people working at The Forum and visitors staying at the new hotel, helping to create new businesses in the area.

All these signs point to Gloucester experiencing a period of remarkable growth and renewal.
