On the 2nd May I was delighted to be re-elected to Gloucestershire County Council for the eighth time.
The months of March and April had been busy for me as I campaigned in my Kingsholm & Wotton division, whilst I continued to lead Gloucester City Council.
With the election results in, work promptly began on forming a new administration at Shire Hall, under the leadership of my party colleague, Cllr. Lisa Spivey. I will continue in my role as chair of the Fire Services Scrutiny Committee, ensuring oversight and accountability in this vital area.
At Gloucester City Council’s annual meeting, it was the Liberal Democrats’ turn to nominate civic leaders. Our shared approach to civic responsibilities allowed us to appoint Cllr. Ashley Bowkett as Mayor and Cllr. Linda Castle as Sheriff. Additionally, the council endorsed the corporate plan, Putting the Heart Back into Gloucester, which sets the administration’s priorities through to 2028.
As leader, I also conducted interviews with the top two bidders interested in purchasing Gloucestershire Airport, with a full council decision scheduled for 26th June.
Dealing with community concerns
Meanwhile, local election campaigns often highlight new community concerns, and despite my leadership responsibilities, I remain committed to directly addressing the needs of my constituents – a role I find deeply rewarding.
A crucial discussion took place with city and county council officers to tackle the issue of gate streets being misused as a rat-run and informal parking area in the evenings. Plans are now in motion to implement new traffic regulations alongside ANPR cameras.
Amid these responsibilities, I took the opportunity to enjoy local cultural events, including the vibrant Polish Heritage Day in Gloucester Park on 10th May, and the Filipino Association of Gloucestershire’s celebration in Kings Square the following day, joined by my cabinet colleagues Caroline Courtney and Rebecca Trimnell. These festivities serve as a wonderful reminder of the diverse communities that enrich our city.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
