A recap of the year’s projects and events

As we say goodbye to 2025, I thought I would use this final opportunity of the year for a recap of some of the projects and events that have made this year so special.

I started the year by reporting on our kerbside recycling rate and how the recyclable materials are translated into food-bank and community pantry donations by our recycling partner. The more kerbside recycling we collect, the more Plan B gives to worthy causes in our area. I hope that we can beat our recycling rates next year and continue to help our residents and our planet.

The new year also brought news of our intention to sell the Municipal Offices and our stake in Gloucestershire Airport. Selling such a historic building and an airport is a long process, and not an easy decision to have made, but I believe that it will provide good value for money for our residents.

A fantastic year for culture and events

2025 was fantastic for culture and events in our town. Over the year I have highlighted the return of our world-famous Cheltenham Festival in March, as well as the brilliant No Child Left Behind ‘Party in the Park’ in August. And, most recently, The Wilson’s exciting textiles exhibition arrived in town in partnership with London’s Hayward Gallery, which will run until January. I cannot wait to see what events will light up 2026.

This year the government set out its plans to create large unitary authorities in areas, like ours, that are currently served by smaller city and district councils. Our plans have been submitted and I have spoken up in Cheltenham’s best interests. On that note, in 2025, progress was made with our landmark Golden Valley development with planning permission being granted to build more affordable housing and a world-leading cyber park to our town.

This month I am looking forward to the return of our ice rink, which always draws in extra footfall for our businesses and provides an unbeatable festive experience for visitors and Cheltonians alike.

2025 has been an incredibly busy year at your council and I expect 2026 will be just as exciting!
