Local independent businesses are calling on the community for support as they showcase the exceptional variety of products, services, and experiences they provide.
With renewed energy and creativity, they are committed to revitalising the high street and ensuring it remains a vibrant and welcoming destination for all.
There are over 300 independent traders in Gloucester city centre, from delicious eateries like Aroma, Sisu Pancakes, and Mister’s, to treasure trove shops like Bizarre, Faeluna and so many more.
These businesses – run by passionate families, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals – bring unique energy and character to the Gate Streets and beyond. By choosing to support them, residents and visitors alike are making a direct impact on livelihoods and helping to ensure a thriving, resilient high street.
One of the businesses participating is Bizarre, a well-loved independent store on Westgate Street. Owner Kate Lankester shared her enthusiasm for the event: “Bizarre is an independent, women run business on Westgate Street.
“We have been trading for nine years, selling alternative clothing, gifts and jewellery and we have a studio offering body piercings and semi-permanent make up services. We pride ourselves on offering something different on the high street to the larger well-known stores.”
She added: “We are proud to be part of the Independents Week, and love to take part in local events like the Gloucester Goes Retro in August and Small Business Saturday.”
Gloucester Food Dock is a thriving hub of independently run food and drink outlets overlooking the city’s beautiful waterfront. They are taking part in Independents Week for the second year running.
“When you support an independent business, you’re not just making a purchase – you’re making a difference.”
Food Dock Operations Director, Sarah Mansfield, said: “Independents Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Food Dock businesses who are rooted in the South West —independent businesses that not only love what they do, but also champion local producers and support the wider region. With special offers throughout the week, it’s the perfect time to explore and enjoy this thriving, independent food community.”
Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) is playing a leading role in co-ordinating and promoting this year’s Independents Week.
BID Manager Emily Gibbon said: “Whether you’re picking up a coffee from your favourite café, getting your bike serviced, or buying a gift for someone special, every pound spent locally helps keep Gloucester’s community thriving.
“When you support an independent business, you’re not just making a purchase – you’re making a difference.
“Independents Week is a time to celebrate the wonderful unique offering that Gloucester’s independent businesses provide for the city, its residents and visitors. This week we encourage you to support local and perhaps discover somewhere new.”Other Images
