There probably aren’t that many people whose memorial service can fill Gloucester Cathedral and leave standing room only, but that’s how it was when hundreds gathered to celebrate the life of Nick Broady in February.
Nick was born in Matson and brought up in Tredworth. He was probably best known for his work with the Pied Piper Appeal, which he chaired for over a decade, helping to raise many millions of pounds over the years for sick and disabled children in Gloucestershire.
Nick was in the motor trade, establishing Avenue Cars in 1987 at the age of 25, building it to be a major player locally and dealing in some pretty special high-end vehicles. The Pied Piper Motor Show at Highnam Court was Nick’s creation and will be part of his legacy. He also chaired the Gloucester Rugby Foundation, having had a long association with the club – from selling programmes as a youngster to being a boxholder for 30 years, to chairing the testimonial season for former player Mark ‘Pasty’ Cornwall. Nick mentored many other charity leaders and gave talks to young college students about his journey.
Nick was an accomplished sportsman too, playing county level squash, pool, football and most recently golf, captaining Brickhampton and in 2025 he became the Gloucestershire Golf Captains’ Captain.
In 2019, his efforts were recognised by being awarded the Ambassador of the Year title at
the Believe in Gloucester Awards. In 2025, he received the Believe in Gloucester Lifetime Achievement Award.Nick passed away on Christmas Day 2025 after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease – something he faced with his typical bravery and dignity.
That so many people came together to give thanks for his life and pay their respects is a tribute to how many lives he helped change for the better.
