Spring home refresh

Is there a season more joyful than spring? Its representation of rebirth, renewal and abundance in nature is on display everywhere we look. It’s the perfect time to reflect that in our homes, bringing a fresh and exciting feel to your rooms.

Spring cleaning is an age-old notion and for me it’s the starting point to waking up a space after the cosy, dark winter months. It reconnects you to your home and inspires ideas for the spring refresh. Sometimes the smallest of changes can have a significant impact.

Transform plain fabric into something wonderful

Nature-inspired interiors that are colourful and tactile, with borders and fringes on soft furnishings, bring so much gorgeous texture into your home. Passementerie, the art of making elaborate trims or edging, is available in lots of exciting colours and designs. Added to cushions, blinds, curtains and throws, trims can transform a plain fabric into something wonderful. Check out the gorgeous creations by Christopher Farr Cloth, Imogen Heath, Designers Guild, Samuel and Sons, and Elizabeth Ashdown.

Another mini masterstroke is to switch up the handles on your cabinetry. I love Matilda Goad’s Wave and Bamboo creations for wardrobes, kitchen dressers, chests of drawers and bedside tables. They instantly elevate a plain piece of furniture into something unique and current.

Get creative when it comes to your walls, too. If you’re looking at pictures that no longer interest or inspire you, it’s probably time to make a change. If you’re looking for new, there’s so much great, affordable artwork out there. If you like your artwork but the frames are dated, try painting the frames and mounts you already have with colours and designs that work well in your room. Re-framing pictures may also be all that’s needed.

Ceramic dishes add texture and detail

It’s not just artwork that looks good on walls – ceramic dishes, plates and baskets also add texture and detail. You can hang plates with small discs that stick to the back and are invisible from the front. They’re available from hardware stores and are a big improvement on traditional plate wires.

When the spring and summer flowers start to bloom you can never have too many vases. That said, jugs and vases don’t need to hold anything; they need no other purpose than to be admired. Along with house plants, ceramic pots, jugs, glassware and wood earn their place in any room.

Enjoy your spring refresh.
