Rug up for winter

November is the month for firework parties, but there can also be dull, dark days, so it’s a good time to get cosy and snuggle inside. Why not add some extra cosiness and warmth underfoot and invest in a new rug?
This season’s new ranges have some great designs and colours, with art-inspired patterns and interesting textures. Whether your style is bold contemporary or faded vintage, follow my advice to help you choose the right rug.
Zone your space
A rug can completely transform the feel and shape of a room. In a living room, a rug placed beneath the sofa and chairs immediately creates a cosy seating area, and under a table and chairs adds definition to a dining space. Size is key, so go large to make the room scheme look more cohesive, and be sure to measure the space before you buy.
Texture and warmth
In winter, there is nothing better than the feeling of a soft rug under your feet. For softness and durability, choose a natural material like pure wool or Icelandic sheepskin. For a cost-effective option, invest in an on-trend shaggy rug. Check out La Redoute’s textured version in teal blue.
Sisal and hemp rugs are always a practical choice. I have one in my dining area leading to the garden, and in winter I layer it up with a beautiful wool vintage rug I found in a local charity shop.
Colour choices
With such a wide choice of colours available, it’s not hard to find the perfect rug to complement your existing décor. A muted co-ordinating colour ties a scheme together, and a rug in a bold hue peps up a neutral scheme.
The White Company’s stylish ivory Flokati rug would bring a cosy feel to any room, and Birdie Fortescue’s beautiful red patterned Tulip Suzani rug is perfect for a seasonal pop of colour.
Artful designs
Rugs are the new art. I popped into a rug shop in a side street on a recent visit to the USA and was blown away by the amazing bespoke designs and the story behind them. We can’t all afford bespoke, but there are some lovely patterned rugs on the high street that would instantly update a room. The black and white Berber style Moroccan look is still current and there are some great affordable versions at Dunelm and Next.
Make a style statement
For on-trend style, look no further than Swedish brand Nordic Knots. I love their patterned and textured designs in fashionable colours.
So, if you want to add personality to a room, just add a rug! As winter approaches, it’s the must-have home accessory for the season and the perfect way to create a stylish and welcoming space to enjoy during the cooler months of the year.Other Images
