Tomboys of summer

Ever since the ‘tomboyish’ style of the eighties was revived in hair and make-up backstage at Robert Cavalli, the boy-meets-girl ensemble has become the look not only for the guys, but the girls too. Rather than the va-va-voom vixen or the ladylike uptown girl we’re used to seeing at the forefront of these trends, it is the turn of the laid back tomboy to take the spotlight.

However, this tomboy trend is hardly a new invention. The word tomboy dates back to the late 1500s, when it was used to describe a bold-spirited or confident woman. During the Jazz Age the ‘garçonne’ was born – the French word referring both to the sporty, bob-haired look that women adopted and a specific type of dress.

Keep it surprising and fresh
It wouldn’t be a new trend though if it wasn’t an old one revived, so this season’s take on tomboy elevates the look for not only a revival, but a reinvention. The trick for guys and girls to keep it surprising and fresh is not the grungy, androgynous fashion you would expect. This year’s take on tomboy hair is to adopt a deep side parting and style it into a quiff. Yes, you read that right, a carefully – or not so carefully – cool, constructed quiff.

An easy and achievable style that works for everyone
Comb in a deep side parting with an Original Tangle Teaser – the needled brush slides through wet hair without pulling out masses of it that, let’s face it, all of our regular hairbrushes do! Blow dry with Redken’s Guts 10 Volume Spray Foam, a product recommended specifically to create a slight peak in the front and straight length at the back. That way you get a bit of boy in the front with a bit of girl at the back.

It’s such an easy and achievable style that it works for all female and male hairstyles, so there’s no need to miss out!

And if conforming to what’s ‘on-trend’ isn’t rebellious enough for you, just remember this take on the tomboy look isn’t the norm. After all, what would a true trend be without a little rebellion – tomboys, after all, just want to have fun!
