Beef Wellington Roast Dinner. I just wanted to say those words first to let it sink in. It’s a thing, and they’re serving it up at The Lygon Arms in Broadway, and it’s truly delicious.
Not only can you eat dinner in the most beautiful setting – trust me, it’s stunning – but you can also choose between a traditional roast dinner, and a wellington roast (there’s a veggie wellington too!).
I was extremely excited when they invited me along, roast beef is my favourite meal, so I knew I was going to be in for a treat. And I was certainly not disappointed.
We headed over there on a sunny Sunday afternoon, the perfect time for a big roast followed by a walk through a pretty Cotswolds town.
Having managed to find a parking space at the hotel, and head in a few minutes late, the staff were awaiting our arrival, and had a table set out in the grand dining room, with the sun shining in through the window. It was the perfect setting.
The walls are covered in traditional paintings and the most incredible chandeliers, carved to look like antlers. There’s even a balcony which overlooks the room, it’s an amazing place to go and take a look at.
We started with some warm bread, served with a very cute little packet of local butter. The bread was freshly baked and full of flavour. As there were two of us, we were able to try both the traditional roast beef, and the Wellington (we’re here to talk about the Wellington but I can assure you the roast beef is fantastic too!).
Out came beautiful dishes of meat, potatoes and colourful vegetables. You could cut through the beef wellington like butter, it was tender, rich and perfectly pink, with flaky pastry to compliment. The roast potatoes were light and fluffy, with a crisp outer edge which added a great amount of crunch.
I was a huge fan of the vegetable medley, which finished off both of our delicious roast dinners perfectly. It was all topped off with the tastiest of jus to accompany, which pulled everything together.
Feeling fairly satisfied and full, after such a wonderful plate of food, we couldn’t resist taking a look at the dessert menu. There is nothing better to finish off a roast dinner, than a crumble, in my opinion.
So we ordered the “seasonal fruit crumble” – which the waitress told us was apple and blackberry, my absolute favourite. It came out in a cast iron pan, piping hot and fresh.
The fruit was the perfect combination of tart and sweet, all topped off with a tasty, crunchy crumble. It was served with clotted cream ice cream, which added a delicious creaminess and cooled down the crumble to allow us to eat it quicker (I’m not very good at being patient and allowing my food to cool down).
We had a little peek around the hotel as we left, which is absolutely beautiful. There are so many places to visit in the Cotswolds, but if you’re looking for somewhere which oozes class and elegance and serves up one of the best roast dinners I’ve had, then this is the place to visit.
And I would certainly recommend trying the Wellington roast, something you’re unlikely to get anywhere else! For more reviews by Louise, check out cheltenhamfoodie.com or follow her on Instagram @cheltenhamfoodie
