James Lisney James Lisney

James Lisney enjoys a rich musical life. A renowned pianist who has played at some of the world’s most famous venues, he is looking forward to performing at the Pittville Pump Room in Cheltenham. Ahead of his performance on May 18 he spoke with The Local Answer.

How old were you when you started playing the piano?

I was four years old when I first sat down and started playing. Growing up I was a keen sportsman but music was always my main passion and it won the battle for supremacy in the end.

Who were your major influences on your playing?

I was incredibly lucky to have one of the best piano teachers in the world as my teacher, the renowned Phyllis Sellick. She taught at the Royal College of Music and was the biggest influence on my career. She worked alongside people like Vaughan Williams and Rachmaninoff, I used to love hearing her speak about them. She was so passionate about music, that definitely rubbed off on me throughout my teenage years.

You’ve played many times at the Pump Room in Cheltenham, what do you like about it?

I’ve been lucky enough to play many concerts in Cheltenham both at the Pump Room and the Town Hall, I love coming back every time. The Pittville Pump Room is a grand setting, somewhere where you’re excited to play, no matter how many times you’ve played there before.

There’s something so very special about a live concert. Playing in front of an audience of knowledgeable music fans still gives me such a great thrill.

Where’s your favourite concert venue?

There’s a couple that spring to mind; the Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona and the Ateneul Roman in Bucharest but the Pitville Pump Room is definitely one of my favourites as well. I’ve performed in Cheltenham over 60 times, it’s always exciting coming back and seeing familiar faces and old friends.
People are often surprised when I tell them I prefer playing at the smaller venues. The larger theatres and concert halls give you a sense of detachment from the crowd. I love the intimacy of the smaller venues. Audiences tend to be more enthused when you’re closer to them.

You’ve played all over the world. How do attitudes towards classical music change from country to country?

I recently played a concert in Mumbai which was a total delight. The audience were extremely knowledgeable and queued up after I’d finished playing to ask me questions on classical music. It goes to show the popularity of classical music all over the world.

I often play in mainland Europe. The people of Germany and France are so enthusiastic and passionate. It’s always a great thrill to visit these countries and I’d also add Belgium, Holland and Spain to the list. It’s very exciting to speak to members of the audience after a performance. I love answering their questions.

What advice would you give to young musicians wishing to pursue a career in the industry?

It’s very important to take the initiative and get out there and play, no matter how daunting it seems at first. Playing to an audience is very different to practising with no one watching. You really have to dedicate yourself to playing, reading and really immerse yourself in music. Focus less on image and more on playing.
