The Tewkesbury Battlefield Society is a group dedicated to the preservation, promotion and interpretation of history of the sites associated with The War of the Roses, which concluded in Tewkesbury.

The Society commissioned the building of two sculptures entitled ‘The Arrival’, which mark the site of one of the crucial battles and celebrate the historic character of the town.

The sculptures are located on Stonehill roundabout, where the A38 Gloucester Road meets the new Tewkesbury relief road on the southern edge of the town. This is where the Yorkist forces would have first spotted their Lancast-rian opponents on the morning of the battle.

The two armies are each represented by a monumentally-scaled oak sculpture. The Yorkists’ is a 5 metre high horse carrying a knight holding an 8 metre long stainless steel lance topped with a pennant. The defeated Lancastrians’ is a riderless horse with a similar lance resting across its back, standing opposite the mounted knight.

The project has run since 1977, commencing with a design competition, followed by fundraising and finally the construction of the beautiful sculptures – a lasting memorial to signify the historic battle, and a new landmark for Tewkesbury.
