Around the world in 48 hours – without leaving Mill Hill

It’s a month from now and you’re flying to Australia in a home-made plane or backpacking across the Sahara. And all without leaving Mill Hill, London!

For several years, a highlight of my travel year has been the Adventure Travel Film Festival (ATFF) held at easily reached Mill Hill School in North West London. Whether you’re a serious independent traveller seeking inspiration, or a dyed-in-the-wool armchair adventurer, the event is a delight – and a bargain.

Amazing films, food and atmosphere

For eight years, adventure filmmakers Austin Vince and Lois Pryce have organised the festival to showcase high-quality indie films about audacious, arduous and downright bonkers adventures. As a five-festival veteran, I can affirm the event’s quality and value. You could book day tickets and stay in a local hotel or B&B, but the event is really about camping. That’s my recommendation; you can self-cater, but the food provided is amazing, in copious quantities and reasonably priced.

Travel films ‘under the stars’

The typical itinerary is to roll up after lunch on Friday (don’t forget your tickets, which must be pre-booked), pitch your tent, then enjoy a glass glass of something on Mill Hill’s expansive lawns before watching the first of dozens of films that run until Sunday. If the weather’s good, the main Friday and Saturday night features are on a big screen, ‘under the stars’. The atmosphere is fantastic.

You won’t be bored

That sets the scene for the rest of the weekend, with an eclectic schedule of mind-blowing and thought provoking travel films ranging from 90-minute epics to five minute ‘shorts’. Last year’s highlights included rowing the Pacific, driving Trabant cars down South America, and a wonderfully atmospheric travelogue about the 100-year-old ‘Liemba’ that plies the Tanzanian coast. Because of the strict qualifying standards, the cinematic standard is consistently high. You’ll gasp, cry and marvel at what people do, but you won’t be bored.

Throughout the weekend, films are supported by workshops, and seminars on travel filming and writing. Whether your next adventure is stand-up paddling around Skye or motorcycling the Silk Route, you’ll find inspiration.

Best of all is that the festival attracts a consistently decent crowd. Everyone has a great time, and so, I’m sure, will you if you come to Mill Hill between 10th and 12th August 2018. See you there!
