For those who know him, it’s not difficult to spot James Thomas in this photograph.

The Cirencester Athletics Club’s men’s captain is in the red vest wearing number five and is going very nicely in the Skirrid Fell Race, near Abergavenny.

Look very closely at the picture and you can see another red vest at the bottom of the hill – that belongs to his wife Liz who was also taking part in the same race.

“They don’t run together,” said the club’s publicity officer Liza Darroch.

Liz is the ladies’ captain at Cirencester AC and finished the event in just over an hour, despite having to resort to hands and knees on the steeper slopes – just like her hubby.

And steep the slopes certainly were – the race was over 5.7 kilometres and consisted of a 450-metre climb.

James finished in fifth place in a time of 33 minutes, 44 seconds, which was two minutes, 40 seconds behind the winner.

“James has been running well for a while,” said Liza, “he’s as skinny as whippet.”

And Liza is full of praise for the jobs that James and Liz are doing as captains at the club.

“They’re very keen,” she said, “and bring lots of enthusiasm. It’s their job to get the teams together every month for the cross-country and they set a wonderful example – they always run themselves.”

And if that doesn’t persuade people to run, they have another trick up the sleeve.

“They always bring chocolate brownies,” laughed Liza, “that always helps!”

So what were they doing in Abergavenny?

“They were in Wales for the St James’s Place annual bonanza – which is where Liz works – but still managed to fit in a quick fell race scrambling up in knee deep snow to the top of Skirrid,” said Liza.
