Chosen Hill set up a grandstand finish to their Western Counties North campaign when they defeated Matson 22-17 at their Churchdown home on Saturday.

Now all they have to do is go to Stroud and earn a bonus-point win to ensure they stay in the division for another season.

That’s easier said than done, of course, but as committee member Phil King says: “It’s five points or nothing.”

Chosen Hill’s fixture with Stroud is a rearranged game after the original game in September was abandoned because of fighting.

The two teams have since played each at Brookfield Road – Stroud edged to a 37-33 win – but the Easter Saturday date is certainly creating some difficulties.

“Quite a few of the players will be away,” said King, who himself won’t be able to be at Fromehall Park, “I’m not too sure what side we’ll be putting out.”

One club who will be very interested in the goings-on in Stroud on Saturday are Cheltenham.

They completed their fixtures with a comfortable 31-5 win over Old Richians on Saturday – a result that sent Old Richians down – and they now sit four points clear of Chosen Hill immediately above the relegation zone.

Chosen Hill need a bonus-point win to avoid dropping into Gloucestershire Premier because Cheltenham have won more games than them.

“It’s very important that we stay in the division,” said King, “it’s the level we need to be playing at.

“We had a bad start to the season. We’ve got better as the season has gone on and we’ve had some good results, but we’ve lost a couple of games which maybe we should have won.

“We lost to Gordano a couple of weeks ago when we could have won. If we had we’d only need a point on Saturday.”

And Stroud will certainly be no pushovers. Despite losing 52-36 at Barton Hill on Saturday – a result that confirmed Barton Hill’s survival in the division – they have enjoyed a good campaign and are guaranteed a fourth-place finish.

“We’re taking the game seriously and we’re going to play to win it,” said Stroud president Russell Hillier.

“We’ve had a pretty good season and we want to finish it accordingly.”
