Longlevens host St Mary’s Old Boys in Gloucestershire Premier on Saturday hoping to maintain their crackerjack start to the new season.

They have played four and won four – all with a bonus point – and sit proudly at the top of the table alongside Chosen Hill and Cheltenham North.

And with Chosen Hill and the North meeting in Churchdown, there’s every chance that Longlevens could be out in front on their own by late Saturday afternoon.

Not that Longlevens captain Josh Lyons is taking anything for granted even though St Mary’s Old Boys have made an uncertain start to the campaign.

They have won one and lost three of their opening four games and currently sit ninth in the 12-strong division.

“They’ll be a typical Bristol side,” said Lyons. “They’ll be good in the forwards, they’ll scrum well, it will be a good battle.

“We’ve got quite a good pack and we’ve got a lot of youth in the backs.

“Hopefully the weather will be nice and dry and our young lads can look to run with the ball.”

Longlevens have certainly been racking up the points this season – they’ve scored 203 points in their four games – as have Chosen Hill and Cheltenham North.

Lyons has a number of friends who play for Chosen Hill and while he admits he’ll be very interested to see how things unfold at Brookfield Road on Saturday, ask him who will win and he says: “I’m not too sure.”

Ask him when Longlevens are playing Chosen Hill, however, and he knows the answer to that – “7th December,” he said.

That game is at Chosen Hill and before that Longlevens travel to Cheltenham North on 16th November.
