Fairford Rugby Club ready to step up a level in Stroud Comination cup

Stroud are set to host Fairford at Fromehall Park in the Stroud Combination Senior Cup on Saturday

Fairford, who are celebrating their 25^th anniversary this year, are competing in the Stroud and District Combination’s Senior Cup for the first time this season.

They have been drawn away to Stroud in a match that will take place on Saturday, with the winners playing either Dursley or Cirencester in the final at Cirencester on Saturday 7^th May.

“We’ve never played Stroud 1sts before,” said Fairford acting chairman Steve Darley, who is looking forward to the game at Fromehall Park.

“We’ve got a decent side when we put our best XV out, we’ve had some good victories this season including beating Cirencester.”

Fairford, who have won the Combination’s Junior Cup – the second-string competition – for the last three seasons, finished 10th in the 12-strong Gloucestershire One North.

“Our coach Danny Briggs has done an absolutely amazing job, he’s been phenomenal,” said Darley. “Like a lot of clubs we suffered quite a lot because of Covid, but he’s worked really, really hard, keeping morale high.”

Meanwhile, Stroud’s flagship team finished fourth in Gloucestershire Two North. The club withdrew from South West One West at the start of the campaign due to a shortage of players able to play at that level.
