Old Cryptians have enjoyed a fantastic season Old Cryptians have enjoyed a fantastic season

That’s some going because if they do beat visitors Cirencester on Saturday it will guarantee they will be champions on the first Saturday in March.

That will bring with it promotion to Gloucestershire Premier, of course, and after winning 15 and drawing one of their 17 league games this season, their supporters will be confident of getting another win even though Cirencester have won their last four games themselves.

"It's been a fantastic season," said player/coach Jake McMahon, who joined the club from Gordon League at the start of last season.

"That's particularly after last season when we finished third and just missed out on promotion and also just missed out on a place at Twickenham after losing in the semi-final of the RFU Junior Vase."

Not that 26-year-old McMahon, a hooker, is taking anything for granted against Cirencester even though his younger brother Luke, a fly-half, has been in scintillating form for them this season.

"We're trying to treat the game like it's a national cup final," he said. "In fact, it's bigger than that. To be in this position with five games to go is a great achievement. And we're still on target for 100 points for the season, it's brilliant."

Old Cryptians, who travel to play Dorset and Wilts Two North high-fliers Westbury in an RFU Junior Vase quarter-final a week on Saturday, currently have 78 points from 17 games, 23 more than nearest rivals Old Elizabethans.
