It’s been a season to remember for Cinderford Rugby Club.

The first team have been flying high in National Two South and in January stunned big rivals Chinnor by going to their place and winning 26-14.

And while Paul Morris’ flagship side have understandably been winning most of the plaudits, just as pleasing for club stalwart Rob Worgan is the overall good health of the club.

“Yes, it’s very good at the moment,” said Worgan. “Paul as director of rugby has done a great job, a wonderful job.

“He works very well with coaches Clive Stuart-Smith and Adam Balding, but the great thing about him is that he’s not just interested in the first team.

“He works very well with Richard Planchant, who runs the United, and also Steve Jelf, who runs the Stags.”

The experienced Morris used to run the United, of course, before taking on the lead role two-and-a-half years ago, and that time spent with the 2nd XV has undoubtedly improved his understanding of exactly what makes the club tick.

Worgan, who was chairman for 18 years before standing down before the start of the current campaign, is certainly a big fan.

“Paul’s very well respected both inside and outside the club,” Worgan said. “He’s a blunt speaker but everybody trusts him. He’s very good in his dealings with the players and supporters.”

And while the players have been doing the business on the pitch, off the pitch the supporters have certainly played their part as well.

“We’ve got a real good hardcore of about 150,” said Worgan, who these days is the club’s fixture secretary and referee contact.

“We always take quite a few away and I’d say that for most home games we get 350 to 400. For some of the bigger games we get more than that.”

And while things are certainly going very well at the club just now, the future looks pretty bright too.

“The juniors are stronger than they’ve been for quite a while,” said 69-year-old Worgan. “We’ve got a very good under-17s team and the girls’ section is strong too.

“We’ve had the girls’ section for about 10 years, but in the last two years it’s really taken off.

“We’ve got three girls’ teams at under-18s, under-15s and under-13s. Paul Lydiard has done a really good job.”

And Worgan knows what he’s talking about because he has been involved with the club since his teens.

“I used to play in the first team and second team,” he said. “I’d play anywhere in the front row but I also played in the back row.

“I wasn’t a star player but I was always there.”

He still is of course… and he’s enjoying what he’s seeing.
