Don’t be surprised to see Daisy Wheeler break into a gallop in Chipping Campden Hockey Club’s midfield this season.

That’s because as well as being captain of the West Clubs’ Women’s League Severn Division One side, she is also a very keen horse rider.

She’s pretty good at both, too, and has been involved in both sports for a fair proportion of her near 22 years.

She’s obviously got plenty on her plate – she also works for Stow Agricultural in Longborough – but was happy to put her hand up to become Chipping Campden’s new captain once Kate Potter had decided to stand down.

“I like to be involved,” said Daisy. “I thought now was a good time because Kate and a few of the older players are still around to help me if needed.”

It was certainly a brave decision because Daisy, who first started playing hockey at Chipping Campden School, has never captained a side at any level before.

Not that the midfielder, who likes to spray the ball about from the centre of the park, sees whatever success the club enjoy this season being just down to her.

“One of the reasons I like hockey is because it is a team game,” she said. “I am very much a team player and if we are successful it will be a huge team effort.”

Ask her to pick out a couple of players who are key this season and she deliberates before saying: “Emily Turner, she’s a very good player. She plays left midfield and is only 16. She just needs a bit more confidence.

“And we’ve got Olivia Hayden up front. She works really well with Sarah Green.”

Daisy joined Chipping Campden from Bretforton for the start of the 2015/16 season. Despite being a relatively new club – “They were only formed a couple of years before I joined them,” said Daisy – the club have already enjoyed one promotion and are looking for more.

“I would like to get out of Severn One,” said Daisy. “The aim is to go forward and enjoy it.”

Daisy certainly puts her best foot forward when she is riding her horse Up With The Lark.

A member of Croome Pony Club and Cropthorne and Evesham Vale Riding Club, she competes to a good standard at both pony club championships and eventing championships.

Her younger brother Toby used to ride out for National Hunt trainers Robin Dickin and Ian Williams “until he shot up to 6ft 2in”, said Daisy, who comes from a strong sporting family.

He parents Andrew and Julie, who run a farm in Honeybourne, are both into riding and they know their hockey too.

At least Daisy won’t have far to go if she needs any advice this season.
