Aaron Tomson played a major role with bat and ball as Dumbleton claimed a dramatic one-wicket win at Cirencester.

He took two for 16 from five overs, including the wicket of top scorer Jono Jamieson-Black for 53, and then made 52 before being seventh man out as his side, needing 180 to win, just got over the line.

The win keeps Dumbleton hot on the tails of Painswick, who have won all six of their Gloucestershire Division games in the West of England Premier League, while Cirencester are fourth.

Cirencester actually began well after winning the toss, with Dumbleton all-rounder and former captain Craig Baldwin saying: “They went off like a rocket, Charl Kotze had 40 before you knew it.”

Kotze was second man out for 46 with the score on 54 but when Jamie Jamieson-Black was third to go for 16 with the score on 113, wickets tumbled regularly with Cirencester eventually dismissed for 179.

“It was a slow, low pitch,” said Baldwin. “At Dumbleton we’re used to scoring 280/290 so we were pleased to get them out for under 180 but I think it was a par score.

“They had three good spinners who bowled really well. They knew the conditions but we stuck to our game and managed to pull through.”

Tomson, who joined the club this season, hit six boundaries in his 77-ball innings and Baldwin said: “He batted fantastically, he went in at five at a difficult time and played really well.”

Dumbleton still needed another 16 to win when Tomson was out but skipper Adam Stuart, who was joined by last man Will Sharp with eight still needed, held his nerve to steer his side home.

“I was sat next to Will before he went out to bat,” said Baldwin. “I asked him if he had 10 runs in him and he said ‘yeah’, then we lost our ninth wicket!”

Seam bowler Sharp had earlier polished off the tail to take four for 12 and Baldwin, who at 38 is the oldest player in the side, said: “Our aim this season is quite simple, we want to go back up. But it’s a competitive division, only one team get promoted and there are three or four teams who on their day can beat each other.”

Dumbleton were relegated from Premier Two Glos/Wilts at the end of the last season and have lost just once – to Painswick – in the league this season.

They are also still in the National Village Knockout and will play Weekley & Warkton in round five on Sunday after thumping Hagley by 10 wickets.

They host third-placed Gloucester in the Gloucestershire Division on Saturday.
