Gloucestershire won by five wickets

Gloucestershire under-17s made it two wins from two in the Royal London One Day Cup with a comfortable five-wicket win against Hampshire.

In a match reduced by rain to 32 overs per side, Ed Webb (Thornbury) continued his fine form with a commanding 64 not out to see his team home.

Earlier, Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to field. Harry Hankins (Bath) struck the first blow with his first ball of the game having Kantollina caught behind. He got his second a couple of overs later when South skied an attempted pull.

Middleton and Campbell rebuilt before the introduction of Harvey Jupp (Lechlade).

On his Royal London debut, the left-arm chinaman bowler provided the breakthrough when he trapped Campbell LBW.

He then removed the dangerous Middleton caught in the deep. With the fall of wickets Gloucestershire were able to apply plenty of pressure on the incoming batters.

Jupp got his third when he lured Metzger out of his crease and Milo Ayres (Brislington) completed the stumping. With a wicket a piece for George Drissell (Bedminster) and Daaryoush Ahmed (Bristol YMCA) Hampshire were in trouble when they lost their seventh wicket with the score on just 117.

However, sensible batting by Organ (40 not out) and Reynolds (12 not out) moved Hampshire’s total up to 153.

In reply Ayres and Webb got Gloucestershire off to a cracking start. Ayres in particular went into overdrive from the off hitting shots all around the ground in a blistering display.

Webb, solid in defence, clinically picked off the bowlers when their line and length strayed. In the seventh over Ayres nicked one behind for a dynamic 37 out of a partnership of 49.

Both Webb and new man Tom Price looked very comfortable and the quality of their stroke play on a slow wicket was impressive.

The pair moved the score on to 102 before Price misread a sweep shot and was bowled around his legs by the leg-spinner Vaughan who both players had been particularly severe on.

Webb, meanwhile, played with real authority and alongside the in-form Drissell they took the score to 143-2. Drissell then picked out long off and Gloucestershire lost a further two wickets in reaching their target.

Under 17 coach and Gloucestershire head of talent pathway Tim Hancock said: “This was a good win for the 17s. Due to exams and injuries there were seven changes from the side that beat Somerset the previous week.

“We were not at our best in the field and with the ball but we got wickets at the right time and kept Hampshire to a very gettable target.

“The batters played superbly and judged a potentially awkward run chase very well. All the top four were very clinical in their execution of the run chase. I would like to single out Ed Webb too as he looked like a proper player in seeing the team to their target.

“I would like to also say well done to the young lads who came into the side for the first time. Harvey Jupp got key wickets at key times and offers something different to our spin attack and Daz Ahmed also did very well too.

“Selection is going to be very difficult for the next couple of games as there are a lot of options within the squad.”

Gloucestershire Under 14 Boys v Somerset Under 14 Boys (at Taunton St Andrews CC)
ECB Under 14 County Cup - Group 3
Somerset 249-6 (50 overs)
Gloucestershire 185 all out (48.3 overs)
Somerset won by 64 runs

Gloucestershire under-14s suffered back-to back-defeats in the ECB County Cup against Somerset and Berkshire.

Against Somerset a superb 76 off 73 balls from number eight Oliver Wood (Cirencester) proved in vain as the visitors fell 65 runs short of their target of 250.

Wood, who struck the ball powerfully down the ground throughout his innings, hit six fours and two sixes, sharing in an eighth-wicket stand of 78 with Max Shepherd (41) (Bourton Vale). But with the run rate climbing and not enough wickets in hand Gloucestershire were well beaten.

Earlier, Gloucestershire struggled to put the Somerset batsman under pressure for any prolonged period and ended up conceding 249 in their 50 overs – including more than 40 extras.

Left-arm spinner Shepherd (3-30) and off-spinner Kunal Barman (1-31) (Old Bristolians Westbury) were the pick of the bowlers in a below par display from the visitors. For Somerset Jamie Baird (73) and Tom Brooks (not out 58) both batted well, running aggressively and taking the game to Gloucestershire.

In reply Gloucestershire got off to a bad start when Owen Lingard (Winterbourne) fell LBW to the first ball of the innings and never fully recovered.

At one stage Gloucestershire slipped to 41-6 before Hamdi Saleem (27) (Downend), Wood and Shepherd restored some pride. For Somerset offspinner William Chesterton – who opened the bowling - finished with impressive figures of 5-22 from 10 overs.

Seven days later Gloucestershire entertained Berkshire at Dean Close but unfortunately the game followed a similar pattern to their previous match.

After winning the toss, Gloucestershire conceded 232-5 as they were punished for bowling both sides of the wicket. Openers Hilditch (73) and Moffat (52) added 102 for the first wicket before Hilditch and Moffatt (46 from 32 balls) continued to drive home their advantage with a second wicket stand of 71.

Shepherd (0-30 from 10) and Barman (0-9 off four) were again economical while Saleem (1-29) bowled with pace and control.

In reply Gloucestershire recovered from 10-1 to reach 52-1 thanks to a brisk 30 from Will Naish (Frocester). But when he fell, top-edging a pull shot, Gloucestershire struggled to build partnerships, losing six wickets for 51 runs.

Again, it was up to the Gloucestershire lower order to try and steer the side home and they gave Berkshire a scare thanks to some explosive batting from Fuzael Ahmed (Bristol YMCA) who smashed 34 off 20 balls and Wood who hit 35 not out of 19.

But while their efforts got Gloucestershire up with the rate, the lack of wickets in hand proved their downfall and they were bowled out 45 runs short of their target with 11.5 overs still remaining.

Gloucestershire Under 12 Boys v Dorset Under 12 Boys (at Clifton College)
Friendly
Gloucestershire 221-8 (40 overs)
Dorset 137 all out
Gloucestershire won by 84 runs

Gloucestershire under-12s continued their impressive 40-over form to record a comprehensive 84-run win over Dorset at Clifton College.

Batting first Gloucestershire got off to a flying start as Tommy Boorman (Dumbleton) and Ollie McConkey (Reading) added 90 for the first wicket, before the former fell for 30.

Runs continued to flow before McConkey was dismissed for an aggressive 78. Jack Studley (Winterbourne) continued the positive intent as he constructed a busy 51 to help his side reach 221-8 from their 40 overs.

In reply Dorset struggled to keep up with the rate as they lost wickets at regular intervals through some good bowling and ground fielding.
In the end Dorset were bowled out for 137. Toby Rice (Lodway), Ahmed Tabraiz (Pak Bristolians), Taylor Ireland (Frocester) and Hayden Wood (Cheltenham) shared the wickets while there were also three run outs.

Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls v Devon Under 15 Girls (at Cheltenham College)
ECB Women’s U15 County Championship, 40 Over – Division A
Gloucestershire 108 all out (34.4 overs)
Devon 109-1 (23.4 overs)
Devon won by 9 wickets

Gloucestershire suffered a nine-wicket loss to Devon in their latest ECB County Championship match.

The home side made a slow start and lost Ellie Fleck (Dumbleton) in the seventh over for five. They recovered thanks to a second-wicket partnership of 59 between Cerys King (21) (Corse and Staunton) and Nat Wraith (38) (Frenchay). Wraith struck six fours in her 38 which came at just under a run a ball but fell just before the first drinks break to leave her side on 75-2.

But from here Gloucestershire collapsed, losing five wickets for just eight runs – including King.

Molly Bliss (8) (Frenchay) and Zoe Dibble (5) (Apperley) provided some resistance, but the home side were bowled out for 108 in 34.3 overs with Devon bowler Charlotte Massey taking 4-24.

Defending their small total Gloucestershire needed to start well and got an early breakthrough when Fleck – fielding at mid-on - ran out Becca Halliday for seven with a direct hit.

Despite bowling and fielding well and implementing regular bowling changes it was to be the last wicket Gloucestershire took as Devon cruised home to win by nine wickets. Emma Seward (32 not out) and Olivia Churcher (61 not out of 64 balls) secured the win in the 24th over with plenty of time to spare.

Gloucestershire have now won one and lost two games in the County Championship. Their next game is against Somerset at Frenchay on June 14.
