ECB Under 14 County Cup - Group 3
Wiltshire 102-9 (35 overs)
Gloucestershire 103-4 (23.4 overs)
Gloucestershire won by six wickets

Sam Swingwood took 5-11 on his competitive debut to help Gloucestershire cruise to a six-wicket win over Wiltshire in their first ECB Cup match of the season.

The leg-spinner ripped through the home team’s middle order, extracting big turn from an otherwise benign surface as Wiltshire slipped from 53-2 to 102-9 from their 35 overs.

Despite the loss of a couple of late wickets the visitors chased down their target with more than 11 overs to spare thanks to 30 not out from Owen Lingard (Winterbourne) and 37 from Kunal Barman (Old Bristolians Westbury).

Earlier, Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to bowl first in a match that had been reduced to 35 overs-a-side due to rain. Hamdi Saleem (Downend) bowled with pace and control at one end while Oliver Wood (2-19, Cirencester) picked up two wickets at the other - including an athletic caught and bowled - to reduce Wiltshire to 13-2.

The home side recovered with a partnership of 41 between Toby Kershaw (27) and Jonathon Castleton (19) but their hard work was undone by Swingwood (Monmouth) who beat the outside edge with regularity. He was well-supported by tight bowling from fellow spinners Max Shepherd (0-23) and Barman who claimed the key wicket of Kershaw – bowling him through the gate with a well-flighted delivery.

Saleem (1-12) made a breakthrough on his return to the attack but Gloucestershire were unable to prize the last Wiltshire wicket as they closed on 102-9.

In reply, the visitors lost Michael Burger (5, Parkend) – the hero of the last match - with the score on seven but fought back through Lingard and Barman. As the partnership developed the pair ran well between the wickets to keep the total ticking over. Barman looked increasingly fluent with a number of square drives for four in his score of 37. He fell with the score on 67 and although two more wickets followed the assured presence of Lingard ensured the result never really looked in doubt.

Cornwall 127-4 (19.4 overs)
Cornwall won by 6 wickets

Gloucestershire Under 15 Girls beat Dorset and lost to Cornwall in their first T20 double-header of the season.

Against Dorset, Gloucestershire won the toss and struck in the second over when Helen Cutler (1-14, Claverham) removed Robyn Whitmore (0) with her very first ball.

A bowling change brought the second wicket as Maddie Hughes (1-13, Frenchay) clean bowled Freya Cutler (5) in her first over to make it 11-2 in the fifth.

A wicket for leg-spinner Bea Ellis (1-22, Charlton Kings) kept up the pressure but from 25-3 after eight overs, Dorset fought back with a counter-attacking partnership of 48 between opener Hetti Fox (32 not out) and Molly Joyce (14).

Olivier Freer (1-18, Cheltenham) made the crucial breakthrough before late wickets for Molly Bliss (1-12) and Maisie Hunkin (1-5, Frenchay) – who also got a run out restricted Dorset to 90-7 from their 20 overs.

In response Gloucestershire lost Hughes early on but fought back with a partnership of 30 – scored at eight runs an over – between Bliss (13) and Natasha Wraith (Frenchay).

The loss of Bliss did little to slow the run-rate with Wraith in full flow. She added a further 39 with Cerys King (2, Corse and Staunton), eventually making 41 from just 20 balls. Both players fell before the end but Zoe Dibble (8 not out, Apperley) and Ellis (5 not out) kept their cool to see Gloucestershire to a six-wicket win in the 12th over.

Wraith’s imperious form with the bat continued in Gloucestershire’s second match against Cornwall. As in the previous game she came to the crease after the loss of an early wicket and dominated the bowling from the start. Her score of 74 not out came off just 47 balls with 12 fours as Gloucestershire finished on 126-2 from their 20 overs. Wraith was well-supported by Hughes who made 29.

In reply Gloucestershire got off to a perfect start as Hunkin had Cornwall opener Emily Geach caught by King for 1. But the hosts recovered with a second wicket partnership of 37 between Emily Mitchell (15) and Rebecca Odgers (46). This partnership ended when Wraith stumped Mitchell off Alice Mundy (Fairford) before a wicket for King made it 70-3 off 13 overs.

But aided by 42 extras, Cornwall kept up with the required run rate bringing it down to six needed from the final over. Skipper Hunkin (2-18) had Odgers caught by Ellis, but it wasn’t enough to stop Cornwall reaching their target with two balls to spare.

Match tied

Gloucestershire under-15s came out on top of a closely-fought double-header with Dorset after beating them by two runs in the first match and tying the return leg.

In the first match Gloucestershire were put into bat on a dry pitch and made a positive start through Seb Blake (Cheltenham) and Ludo Rhys-Williams (Cirencester) who scored at a rate of four an over for the first 10.

The hosts made a breakthrough in the 14th over when Blake was bowled by Tom Prest for 33. This sparked a mini-collapse as three more wickets fell in quick succession before left-hander James Humphreys (Dumbleton) joined Rhys Williams to share in a 73-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Humphreys fell in the 37th over for 36 and was followed by Rhys Williams an over later for 59.

A knock of 18 from Joe Millard (Bedminster) helped Gloucestershire to 193-7 before the heavens opened.

With the match reduced to 47 overs a side Gloucestershire came out attacking, opening the innings with the pace of Alfie Lewis (Stapleton) and the leg spin of Alex Russell (Charlton Kings). Bowling attacking lines, Russell was unfortunate not to pick up an early wicket.

The breakthrough came in the 8th over, when Tom Prest was expertly run out by Tom Quinlan (Bristol) for 11. Ollie O’Neill (Aston Ingham) then trapped Gabriel Winsor to make it 54-2 from 15.

The home side continued to chip away at their target through brothers James (47) and Alex Turner (12) but were put on the back foot as 113-3 became 117-5 with two new men at the crease.

But again Dorset fought back – this time with a 45-run partnership between Jacob Berry (12) and Jacob Gordon (36). Gordon looked particularly dangerous and threatened to take the game away from Gloucestershire before top-edging Lewis (2-55) to Russell at square leg.

With a run a ball required from the last two overs with three wickets remaining, Gloucestershire had it all to do. But the visitors rose to the occasion. First Tao White was clean bowled by O’Neill (2-34) with a yorker, Andy Cooke was run out by Niblett for three and Jacob Browning was run out by Lewis in the last over, with the home side two runs short of victory.

In the return leg Saxon Campbell (Cheltenham) top-scored with 58 as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 154 in 43.2 overs.

In reply the home side restricted the scoring and continued to take wickets at regular intervals as none of the Dorset top six made more than 10. Spinners Alex Russell (2-20, Charlton Kings) and Cyris Shafi (3-28, Bristol YMCA) did the damage as Gloucestershire took control of the match.

But the hosts were thwarted by the lower order resistance of Matthew Longley (19) who came in at seven and number eight Jacob Gordon who played a captain’s innings of 40 from 58 balls to bring his side right back into contention. Both fell before the end, the latter to Joe Millard (Bedminster) who took 3-34 from nine overs.

With the dangerous pair removed Gloucestershire again sensed victory but a last wicket partnership between Tao White (14 not out) and James Mitchell (7 not out) saw Dorset secure a remarkable tie.

Gloucestershire Under 12 Boys v Oxfordshire, Wales & Combined Prep School XI (at St Edward’s School, Oxford)
Wynard Gibb Cup

Gloucestershire under-12s shared the Wynard Gibb Cup after tying with a Combined Prep School XI in a dramatic “super over”.

With both sides level after the group stage - having won two and lost one of their matches – it all came down to a six-balls-a-side play-off. But even this couldn’t split the two teams who made nine runs each to share the spoils.

Earlier in the day Gloucestershire beat Oxfordshire by seven wickets in their first game. Having been asked to field first Gloucestershire restricted their opponents to 75-8 in their 15 overs, which included five run outs. In reply, Gloucestershire comfortably knocked off the runs with Tommy Boorman (Dumbleton) 31 not out and Hayden Wood (Cheltenham) making 23.

In the second game Gloucestershire batted first and scored an imposing 115 in their 15 overs with Sam Brooks making an excellent 61 not out and Wood finishing on 29 not out. Unfortunately what should have been a defendable total proved not to be the case as the Prep Schools XI made Gloucestershire pay for dropped catches and a lack of discipline with the ball by knocking off the runs in the last over, with only one wicket down.

Gloucestershire bounced back with a comfortable victory over Wales, who were restricted to 66-6, with Will Maxwell (Carsons and Mangotsfield) and Jack Studley (Winterbourne) taking two wickets apiece. In reply Gloucestershire knocked off the runs for the loss of two wickets, Olly McConkey (Reading) scoring 32 not out.

Gloucestershire Under 13 Girls Development v Worcestershire Under 12 Girls and Warwickshire Under 13 Girls Development

The Gloucestershire Girls under-13 development squad held their nerve in the final over to pull off a nailbiting two-run victory over the Worcestershire under-12 county team.

After winning the toss Gloucestershire batted first and posted a competitive total of 130-5 in their 20 overs. Emily Hopkins (Dumbleton) was the standout performer with an excellent 43, supported by Katie Boyle (14, Cirencester) and Phoebe Bradford (12 not out, Cam).

In reply, Worcestershire started off steadily and gradually increased the tempo to put themselves within touching distance of the total. But Gloucestershire showed great character to get themselves back into the game thanks to two wickets apiece from Charlotte Oliver (Bourton Vale) and Bradford.

With 13 runs needed from the final three overs Worcestershire were in the driving seat but a Gloucestershire side that included three under 11s reacted to the pressure superbly to pull off a tremendous two-run victory.

Gloucestershire followed this up with a resounding 153-run win over the Warwickshire under-13s development side.

In a dominant batting display the Gloucestershire girls posted a challenging total of 217- 6 in their 35 overs. Bradford top scored with 37, Hopkins made an unbeaten 33 not out and Oliver finished on 27 not out.

In reply Warwickshire were never in the hunt and struggled to threaten the total against some tight bowling. They were eventually bowled out for 64 with three wickets for Genny Morris (Fairford), and two apiece for Meghan Edwards (Frocester), Oliver and Hopkins.

Gloucestershire Under 11 Girls v Somerset Under 11 Girls (at Frenchay CC)
Friendly
Somerset 117–9 (25 overs)
Gloucestershire 117–8 (25 overs)
Match tied

Gloucestershire under-11 girls tied with local rivals Somerset in a thrilling finish at Frenchay CC.

Needing six off the final over, Gloucestershire got a single before skipper Greer Barnes (Old Bristolians Westbury) brought the scores level with a four through fine leg. But they were unable to get over the line as Reah bowled Barnes off the final ball.

Earlier Somerset had been put in to bat and added 34 for the first wicket. Four wickets for 20 runs put Gloucestershire back into the game and it remained evenly as both runs and wickets flowed in the second half of the innings. The visitors eventually posted 117–9 off their 25 overs. Frenchay pair Ellie Donaldson (3-17) and Evie Patterson (2-10) were the pick of the bowlers.

In reply Gloucestershire reached 40–1 in the 10th over. But as in the first innings wickets fell at regular intervals building up to the nail-biting finish. Alice Wilson (Marshhfield) top scored with 18.

The tie with Somerset was the under 11s’ third match of the season following defeats to Shropshire and Worcestershire – the latter despite a fine 26 from Barnes.

Coach Pete Lamb said: “It hasn’t been the start we wanted, but many of the squad are playing representative cricket for the first time and are therefore learning huge amounts very quickly. The progression we have seen already is very positive and challenging the girls to fix onfield issues themselves is developing them as individuals and as a team.”
