You will have noticed lots of sheer items on the high street, which are tricky for most of us to wear. The best way to be on trend is to just make a portion of your outfit sheer. Lots of skirts have a panel running just below the knee, which can be flattering, and tops often come in a regular fabric, with the lower half or sleeves in a sheer material.

Pleats are everywhere; most of us run a mile thinking it will make us look bigger, which is not always true. The important thing to remember is making sure the item is not too tight, as this makes the pleats open and that is where it becomes very unflattering. Instead, pleats should hang loosely and away from the body. Many pleats come in metallic so are certainly quite obvious; if you decide on a metallic pleated skirt for example, make sure the top is a simple one so the overall effect is not too overwhelming.

Swimwear
Hopefully you are holidaying somewhere you can show off your latest swimwear choice; there are incredible selections on offer nowadays with something for everyone. Gone are the days of only the all in one, with no other options. Now we have choices to flatter every body shape – perfect for those who are one size on the top and another at the bottom, as now you can buy items individually. Many suits are constructed like underwear, which can be incredibly flattering.

Some of us need a little help in finding the perfect swimwear and staff in high street shops are happy to help. While you may not like high street changing rooms, what looks perfect on the hanger might not look so good on us. Swimwear can rarely be returned for obvious reasons, so do take the time to try it on to make sure it fits and looks right.

Some wonderful swim-wear cover ups are available, which can easily double up for evening or day wear with the right accessories. This is a good idea as luggage limitations are forcing us all to choose items we can hopefully utilize more than once when we are away.

Shorts
Short shorts are widely available nowadays, but don’t despair! For those who like a longer style, Bermuda and city type shorts can be found on the high street, many of which fall just above the knee. Lots have matching jackets, which make them look rather smart and suitable for work or travel. Wear them with a smart flat shoe to create a perfect look for a summer’s day.

Straw
Straw bags are a must have. Often reasonably priced, there is an incredible selection of shapes and sizes, and some smaller styles can easily go from day to night. Don’t stop at bags, though – there’s also a great selection of straw hats, and you will even notice straw details on various shoes. As with a lot of trends, limit yourself to one straw item – don’t go too over the top!

The good thing about straw is it is generally inexpensive and stands the test of time. If you really want to give back and feel good about your purchase, look for items that are fair-trade so you are helping women in less well-off countries who are often the ones weaving away to make these great fashion items.

Sliders
Some of us will recall “sliders” – the slip on footwear we used around swimming pools. Often made from terry material with a foam sole, they may remind you of open toe slippers offered during visits to a spa. But no longer!

Sliders now are “high fashion”, made in incredible colours and materials, especially metallic, jewelled, and some are even adorned with velvet bows. Lots of A listers have been seen sporting them when out and about during the day, but also on the red carpet! Nice to see that comfort is being taken seriously by many of our top notch designers. Do be careful if you wear them with tights, as your feet may slip and then they’ll definitely live up to their name!

Hope you all enjoy a wonderful and fashionable summer season.
