Let’s hear it for the guys!

I thought it was about time I devoted my article to you guys out there – after all, men want to look good too don’t they?

That said, I am well aware that you want to do so effortlessly. I have some great news – the capsule wardrobe for men can be just as easy to achieve as the one for women and, not surprisingly, can have fewer basic types of clothing. As many men hate to shop, I am hoping you are all waiting with bated breath for the ‘how?’

3 main categories – work, socialising and hobbies

Think about the time you spend each week on each activity. For many of you there are likely to be three main categories – work, socialising and hobbies. The hobbies tend to take care of themselves and it is likely that you have no trouble at all in finding all the relevant kit you need for cycling, gym or golf – whatever takes your fancy!

When it comes to work, though, it can get confusing. If you still work in a ‘fully corporate’ environment, I suspect you have a uniform – suit, tie, blazer etc. However, many employers are happy for their staff to dress less corporately these days.

Make sure your wardrobe has a few classic staples

If you want to make a good impression, make sure your wardrobe has a few classic staples. A white oxford shirt, smart jeans and smart trainers or loafers will see you through – just make sure they are all clean and tidy! They will not only make you look good at work, but will see you transition perfectly to after work drinks.

On warmer days, plain coloured tees and polo shirts are great casual looks and when it’s chilly, add a cashmere sweater for work and a light bomber in the colour of your choice for evenings.

By the way, those jeans – avoid bootcut! They are not so good for men. Stick to slim, straight or tapered legs – try them all on and see which works best for you. The mirror won’t lie.

Swap jeans for chinos and trainers for brogues

For those occasions when you want to impress, swap jeans for a pair of chinos and trainers for brogues. There are some fantastic shoe styles out there for men these days – find the pair that suits your personality. Believe me, ladies do look at your shoes.

I cannot emphasise enough that cargo shorts and flip flops or sandals with socks do not see you through any and every occasion – despite the fact that I see men in this particular combination who clearly think they do! If they are scruffy then sorry guys, it is simply a massive turn-off. However, on those sunny days where shorts really are the best wear, try smart chino shorts (there are loads of colours to choose from) with a well-fitting short-sleeved shirt. You will be amazed how much better you look.

And finally – I know we shouldn’t mention the unmentionables, – if you must have your underwear on display, please make sure they aren’t threadbare.
