Packing on the style

As holiday time is upon us, I thought I would share a few tips about that all important holiday packing. Over the years I have managed to adjust my routine dramatically, and a six week holiday a few years ago with just one suitcase and hand luggage taught me some vital lessons!

The fact that many airlines now charge separately for hold luggage has focussed my mind on how I can get away with hand luggage only.

Enough different outfits for the length of the holiday
As an image consultant it is really important to me to look the best I can, even when I am on holiday. So you can be sure I think very hard about having a wardrobe that works. I want to have up-to-date styles and colours, and enough different outfits for the length of the holiday.

Learn to compromise
Making careful choices about what to take makes this possible. Of course there has to be some compromise. For example, I don’t pack any sun tan lotion or shower gels and shampoos – except the 100ml clear bottles just to get me through. Often the accommodation will provide most things and there is usually a shop within reasonable distance.

I also have one of those ultra- light cases that are especially sized for hand luggage. That way none of my weight limit is taken up by the case.

So let’s get started. I am using a beach holiday as an example, but you can amend the capsule wardrobe as necessary to encompass other holidays. For evenings, one pair of capri pants and one knee length skirt both in a neutral colour. That way all your tops will go with them. One dress for that special evening (in your best colours) and one cardigan that goes with the dress, skirt and capri’s. Use a selection of costume jewellery to bring the finishing touches to your outfit.

Shoes are a real weakness
For day time, pack swimwear and a kaftan, folding sunhat and sunglasses. Add a lightweight skirt and a pair of shorts and you’re almost there.

Shoes are a real weakness for most people when packing for holidays. Try to limit yourself to a pair of flip flops, trainers and some heeled sandals. This combo should see you through most days. If you need walking shoes, its best to wear them on the plane.

Tops provide you with a different outfit for every day and evening
I have left tops until last because they are what will provide you with a different outfit for every day and evening. Take as many colours and styles as you are able, but make sure most are interchangeable between day and evening with a little accessorising. I use soft jersey fabrics wherever possible because they travel well, take up little space in the case and are available in lots of colour choices. Each season I treat myself to some new ones in the latest colours to freshen up my holiday wardrobe.

This season the pantone colours are beautiful sky blues, soft peach and soft rose. For people who prefer bold colours try orange, lime and bright yellow. Finally, have a great holiday!
