London Fashion Week (LFW) – the most anticipated fashion event of the year – arrived in the final days of February, bringing over 250 of our most prestigious designers together. An event watched worldwide, fashionistas eagerly waited in anticipation of fashion’s next big thing. To outsiders, LFW can often come across as outlandish, but everything eventually trickles down the fashion chain and come September we will begin to see key details from the shows filter into the high street.

London’s Spring Summer 2015 (SS15) fashion week well and truly cemented the start of a 70s phenomenon, and the nostalgia will continue into our winter wardrobes. Crushed velvet, distressed edges, lace, leather and suede were all key features amongst the catwalks.

Topshop’s Unique collection featured a retro dandelion print, cute mini dresses and coats with fluffy cuffs, and the bohemian vibe continued with patch work denim, fur coats (Tom Ford) and over the knee suede boots (Burberry).

JW Anderson based his collection on ‘soviet girls in Berlin in the late 80s/90s’. It takes us back to a pivotal point in fashion history when people really started to discover fashion for themselves. The collection featured classic 80s leather boots, wide belts, floor length leather coats and pin stripes.

Ashley Williams’ AW15 show brought attitude with quirky patches and super cool oversized fur bucket hats.

While LFW showcases womenswear, the male equivalent is London Collections: Men (LC: M). Overshadowed by LFW in the past, LC: M is quickly developing into a worthy contender, now running over four days. A key piece seen in several of the catwalk shows was the shearling jacket. Fashioned both long and short in an array of colours, this is a versatile piece to be worn over a multitude of outfits.

Tom Ford swung with a 60s vibe, showcasing innovative psychedelic prints such as monochrome optical illusion suit jackets. Topman continued in complete 70s glory, titled ‘Bay City Rollers’, which was filled with close fitting flares, turtle- necks, star motifs and oversized flamboyant fur coats, creating top heavy silhouettes.

Other up and coming trends include tartan, paisley prints and blanket scarves. A slightly alternative, but nevertheless prominent, trend across the catwalk was the return of the jumpsuit. Each styled by designers in different ways, it displayed its wearability from day to day.
