Come summer, we all rush to the nearest cosmetic counter to stock up on sunscreen lotions. However, how many of us actually apply the amount we should? Nobody seems to want to take that factor 50 with them in fear of not returning with the tan we all want when we go away. What we forget is the need for shielding your skin from the sun’s rays is an essential part of achieving that healthy glow.

Allowing our skin to burn under the sun does not give us the intended colour we would like – more of a beetroot than a beach babe – so protecting it is an important part of returning with the tan you want, and sunscreen does that job for you.

Sunscreen shields your skin from signs of aging
Hands up who doesn’t want to have young, radiant and healthy-looking skin? No one? Thought so. This is one of the most convincing reasons to use sunscreen. It shields your skin from developing signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.

Sunspots are not only giveaway signs of too much time in the sun, but also a sign of premature aging. To avoid this, I would recommend heading into your local Boots or pharmacy and picking up a Nivea sunscreen – I find the spray is easiest to apply and is absorbed quicker than the cream. It might sound like an obvious suggestion, but going away to any hot country that experiences more sun than the UK – and let’s be honest, that would be most – Nivea is a brand renowned for skin care, and its sunscreen is no exception.

Let us not forget that a tan is healthy. However, what we should all be aware of is that while we are sunbathing to tan, we’re still at risk of being harmed by the harsh ultraviolet rays. Choose a sunscreen that has a minimum protection of factor 30 to prevent tanning induced by UVB, especially if you have a sensitive skin – which Nivea, of course, is great for.

Re-apply every couple of hours
Also, be aware that sweat can wash away the protective coating, so make sure you re-apply sunscreen every couple of hours. People often make the mistake of applying sunscreen when they are already out in the sun. The lotion should be applied at least 20-30 minutes before you are exposed to it and a tip – don’t forget to protect places often forgotten including your ears, lips (nobody likes cracked dry lips), face, feet and back of your hands!

It's a common misconception that wearing make-up means you don't have to worry about sunscreen on your face. Make up will prevent you from burning or catching the sun on your face right? Wrong. Ladies listen up; sunscreen should be applied underneath your make up otherwise you are just as much at risk of becoming a beetroot, as you would be without it.

Check your make-up contains an SPF
Often women think it's acceptable to wear make up in the sun instead of sunscreen. This is not the case! Although within foundations and base coats today, this has been taken care of for you. Most, if not all, credible beauty brands now contain an SPF to act as a sunscreen, meaning you are getting two products for the price of one! So always check the make-up you are buying contains an SPF.

After all, SPF stands for sun protection factor. The Fountain of Youthful Skin exists, and it is called ‘sunscreen’. As we reach the age when the signs of sun damage appear, we get to find out whether grow-ing up with SPF has, in fact, saved face. Want to save face against the sun? Come back from your holiday radiating beach babe, and not beetroot!
