Your wellness reboot

All Areas > Health & Beauty > Looking Good, Feeling Great

Author: Will Mbanga, Posted: Wednesday, 26th June 2019, 09:00

As we enter the second half of the year, this is a good time to reflect on where you are relative to your 2019 goals, and if needed, get back on track! It’s also a good time to give yourself a bit of ‘shock therapy’ in a positive way – a Wellness Reboot!

Rather than just focusing on exercise and diet, this is an opportunity to kick-start every area of your life and use the momentum to drive you through the rest of the year.

The first step is to assess your progress with your goals and intentions. This needs to be brutally honest and encompass all areas of your life, from being active/exercising, sleep, work-life balance, ‘me’ time, friends, family, diet, etc. I bet for most of you the hardest thing to schedule would be ‘me’ time and then exercise.

Focus on small, regular doses of wellness

Creating change in your life can be as simple as incorporating part of your workout into your daily activities, or getting outside into the fresh air or a different environment to re-charge. Our natural inclination is ‘feast or famine’, but if you can focus on giving yourself small, regular doses of wellness, you will find this approach much more achievable than trying to block out big chunks of time.

Mindfulness can help you to de-stress

For improved wellbeing, listening to podcasts, audio-books or reading rather than working on public transport is another beneficial switch you can make to your daily routine. The right type of mindfulness technique can make the difference with respect to building resilience, self-awareness and de-stressing.

Yoga, meditation, prayer and journaling are all unbelievably powerful – men especially, take note! Sufficient sleep and a bedtime routine will also go a long way to helping maintain good health. It’s amazing how firm we are with our children about bedtime, yet as adults we are poor at self-managing this.

Our efficiency and productivity are determined by the quality of fuel we put into our bodies, regular maintenance, and upgrading both hardware (physiology) and software (mental/emotional). To this end, re-assessing your diet, timing of meals and use of supplements is another important step in your reboot.

One practical tip is switching to home-made lunches instead of ‘meal deals’. There are many healthy eating plans and supplement businesses vying for your money, so it’s important to focus on your needs. Where you aren’t getting sufficient nutrients, by all means take advantage of good supplements, but do your homework.

Set realistic targets to achieve every day

A Wellness Reboot is an important way to make yourself happier, healthier and less stressed. Rather than setting yourself a big challenge, sometimes it’s better to set realistic targets to achieve every day. A good approach to this would be similar to how many of us keep our homes clean – a bit of effort every day keeps it fairly tidy.
