Alex Nash, Sim Smith and Cal Whelan first met while they were attending Bishop’s Cleeve Secondary School.

Now, a few years down the line, the three have reunited over a love of music, and formed their own band, SpitFire.

“Four years ago we formed a wedding covers band,” said lead singer and guitarist Alex.

“We had such a good reception for our covers and we wanted the same for our originals. SpitFire has formed over the last couple of years.”

The trio have all lived in Gloucestershire for most of their lives – Sim, who plays bass, emigrated with his family to the UK from New Zealand aged eight.

They all work in the area, in very different jobs – Alex as an aerospace technician, drummer Cal as a postman and Sim as a yacht salesman.

When asked what kind of music SpitFire specialise in and take inspiration from, Alex simply says, “rock songs”.

“We often get told we sound similar to Nickelback and Alter Bridge,” he added.

“We look at up and coming bands to show our support because it is extremely hard to get noticed when you first start.”

August saw SpitFire perform at some of their biggest gigs to date, including a slot at one of the area’s most popular festivals.

“Lakefest was insane, we keep getting messages now on how exciting our performance was. It was electrifying, we walked off the BBC stage feeling like we’d made it!

“We played crowds as big as 20,000 and supported acts such as Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Doctor and the Medics and Nizlopi.”

This summer the boys also released their debut single, ‘Daddy’s Girl’, which has since been featured on BBC Introducing and Planet Rock Radio.

“Planet Rock love it and won’t stop playing it,” said Alex.

“It’s a song about seeing a beautiful young lady in secret with a crazy overprotective dad.”

SpitFire’s next single, ‘I Didn’t Know’ is set to be released soon, with a debut EP to follow early next year.

When it comes to the process of writing and producing their own music, one word comes to Alex’s mind.

“Amazing! We write together so well and then when we take it to the studio it always transforms into something spectacular.

“It amazes us listening to the final product.”
