John Cho is superb from start to finish John Cho is superb from start to finish

David (John Cho) has recently lost his wife to cancer, leaving him to look after his teenage daughter, Margot (Michelle La), alone. On the surface they seem to have a good relationship but out of the blue she disappears, and, delving into her online life, he starts to wonder if he really knows her at all. We discover that sometimes the real person and their online profiles do not match up at all.

Working his way into Margot’s email and Facebook accounts, David learns all sorts of bewildering and disturbing things about his daughter.

The film is shot all the way through its 120 minutes from the point of view of Smartphones and computer screens. At first, I thought this would be irritating in the extreme but seeing as a lot of spend far too much time staring into our mobile phones you quickly become used to it.

The film really opened my eyes to how much of our lives are lived through our phones and laptops. It is the fantastic performance of Cho as the loving and devoted David Kim who engrosses the audience with a performance showing the full array of his talents.

It is within the character’s desperate anguish that we find the moral of this feature: the internet is an incredible tool but can also pose dangers to those who do not use it appropriately.

‘Searching’ is a clever and gripping film complete with red herrings and twists on every corner. This is one of the most original films I have seen in a long time and one I wouldn’t hesitate in watching a second time. In five years’ time, if you Google, ‘great films using the internet as a plot device', I expect ‘Searching’ to feature near the top of the list.
