As the month of May comes to a close, we’ve got one more Bank Holiday to enjoy before summer officially begins.

So here at The Local Answer we’ve put together a handy guide of the best things going on in the county over the Bank Holiday weekend for you to make the most of the day off, come rain or shine.

Gloucester

Exhibitions and events at Nature in Art

Nature in Art Gallery and Museum in Twigworth will be open all weekend and will have events including The Wildlife Art Society International’s Annual Exhibition and a visit from actress Daphne Neville and her otter Rudi.

Cheese Rolling

Places are open for the iconic and frankly mad race at Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth on a first come first served basis, with a maximum of 25 chasers in each race.

There will be seven races between 12pm and 1:30pm, both down and uphill, and plenty of space for spectators.

Gloucester Tall Ships

The annual event takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend and will feature a host of events and entertainment, from pirates to circus performers.

There will also of course be the opportunity to see a number of magnificent tall ships in the docks.

Cheltenham

Cheltenham International Film Festival

The Bank Holiday marks the start of the inaugural Cheltenham International Film Festival.

The Monday will feature two screenings including ‘Sometimes Always Never’ starring Bill Nighy, followed by a Q&A with director Carl Hunter.

The Suffolks May Fair

Suffolk Parade in Cheltenham will once again be hosting its annual street fair on Sunday 26th May, with plenty for all the family to enjoy.

Beginning at 10am, the event will feature all kinds of stalls, live music a variety of street entertainment, and a children’s area with lots to do, including face painting, and rides.

Cheltenham Children’s Festival

The Cheltenham Children’s festival will consist of interactive activities for children, information about childhood, opportunities for children and families in Cheltenham to play together.

The Festival will be based on five broad themes of technology, music, healthy lifestyles, outdoor play and story making.

Cotswolds

Lemur Week at Cotswold Wildlife Park

Starting on Saturday 25th May, Lemur Week at the Cotswold Wildlife Park will include talks, competitions and board games on the endangered species throughout half term.

For children aged six to 11, you can also try the CotsWild Explorers Lemur Activity Trail, with 10% of the ticket price going to Madagascan conservation projects.

South Cerney Street Fair

The South Cerney Street Fair takes place on the Bank Holiday Monday and will feature an array of games and stalls for visitors.

There’ll also be the famous Grand Duck Race, live music and a hog roast on offer.

Nature Week at Cotswold Farm Park

Nature Week at Cotswold Farm Park runs from Saturday 25th May, and will feature a host of activites and events, including bark and leaf rubbing, twig den bundling, mini-beasts safari, log rolling and worm charming.

There’s also the daily sheep shearing and milking, and workshops on the environment and the effects we have on it.

North Gloucestershire

Giffords Circus

Giffords Circus have begun their Xanadu tour and will be at Sudeley Castle on Bank Holiday Monday.

There’s three performances on every day over the weekend and also the chance to dine at the famous Circus Sauce restaurant.

Winchcombe Music and Arts Festival

The final day of the Winchcombe Music and Arts Festival takes place on Monday 27th May.

Cotswold Festival of Steam

For the chance to see classic steam engines, you can visit the Cotswold Festival of Steam.

The annual event held by the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway gives visitors the chance to ride some of the most iconic trains in the country.

Stroud

Magnificent Medieval Merriment

Over the weekend Berkeley Castle will be hosting re-enactments and activities crammed with Lords, Ladies, gunpowder, soldiers’ drill, music, candle-making, cookery demonstrations and more.

Art Unbound

Painswick Rococo Gardens begin their summer-long Art Unbound sculpture exhibition on Sunday 26th May.

18 sculptors from around the UK will be bringing art of all shapes and sizes to the gardens, and will also hold workshops, talks and other events throughout the summer.

Jazz Stroud

From Thursday 23rd to Sunday 25th May, Stroud will be filled with jazz musicians from all over the world, as Jazz Stroud returns for it’s fourth year.

Venues including the Brunel Goods Shed, St Laurence’s Church and the Stroud Valleys Artspace will be hosting gigs and shows throughout the weekend.
