The Stroud countryside is famous for its idyllic villages and cottages, with stunning views and beautiful gardens.

And in Rodborough, a biennial event organised by local people allows visitors to explore the gardens and see works by local artists.

“It’s a community event,” said Joanne Eroglu-Prenter, one of the committee members involved in the organising of the day.

“We have 11 households around Church Place opening their gardens, and we’ve invited 14 local artists to exhibit their work. There’s art in all types of mediums; clay, wood, iron, willow and more.”

The Hidden Gardens and Sculptures of Rodborough (HGS) will also see visitors being able to explore the grounds of the Saxon-era Rodborough Parish Church, and also the secret garden at Rodborough Court.

The event is supported by Arts Council England Lottery Fund, Rodborough Parish Council, Stroud Festivals and Waitrose Green Tokens, meaning that proceeds collected are able to go towards local good causes.

Joanne continued: “This year we’re supporting Mothers In Mind, who help women with their post-natal mental health. Also Stroud Valleys Project, who are focused on improving the local environment.

“We’ll also be contributing to the church restoration fund and the local school which is being restored as a community hall.”

The HGS also gives local schoolchildren the chance to work with artists, as Joanne explains.

“Children from the local primary school will have the chance to visit the common and learn about endangered butterflies.

“They’ll then be creating their own sculpture by re-using materials to also learn about recycling.”

Joanne’s neighbour and bestselling author Katie Fforde will also be opening her garden to visitors and will even be holding a special book signing.

“I only started gardening when I retired in 2013,” added Joanne, a former language teacher.

“But I’ve definitely been bitten by the bug and the event is a wonderful way to celebrate the area.”

The Hidden Gardens and Sculptures of Rodborough takes place on Sunday 9th June.
