Rodborough and Cainscross Old Boys celebrate their Stroud League Division One title win Rodborough and Cainscross Old Boys celebrate their Stroud League Division One title win

Mark Halling signed off in style with Rodborough and Cainscross Old Boys looking forward to life in the Northern Senior League.

It will be the first time the recently crowned Stroud League Division One champions will have played at the level and 54-year-old Halling, who is standing down as club secretary, has certainly played his part in their success.

In recent years he’s been a player, player/manager and manager – he finished playing only a couple of years ago – before taking on the role of secretary and he said with some understatement: “It’s been a good season.”

Rodborough clinched the title earlier this month with a 0-0 draw at home to main rivals Minety. It was the final game of the campaign and it was certainly all to play for because Minety went into the match three points adrift of Rodborough but with a better goal difference.

“Winning the league has been a goal of ours for a while,” said Halling. “We’ve been on the verge of doing it for a couple of seasons now, it was a good way to sign off.”

Rodborough finished runners-up to Tredworth Tigers in 2021/22 – Tredworth have just been promoted to Division One of the Northern Senior League – and Halling is optimistic about the future.

Rodborough’s flagship team play their home games at Stratford Court playing fields in Stroud and Halling said: “Now is the time to move the club forward and try to get our own pitch and clubhouse.”

Rodborough missed out on a league and cup double when they were beaten 2-0 by Minety in the final of the League Cup at Tetbury on Saturday and while that was obviously a disappointment, the club are clearly in a healthy position.

The reserves play in Division Three of the Stroud League and the 3rds play in Division Five and Halling added: “They’ve both had good seasons.”
